So the curse was siphoning off the MC's power or possibly linking them in some other way. Either would explain the mc pulling off simultaneous.

All the same, it was stupid of them to drive him away if he was some sort of source or shield, since if he dies, they lose that source. The smarter thing to do would have been to retire him a hero, set him up comfortably with honors, and continue to leech off him until he succumbed or they found a replacement.
